The beginnings

From a rag ball to the first club

17 July 1932 The day of the club's official founding.

Football in Vela Luka dates back to the early 1920s, when students from Vela Luka, returning from their holidays, brought back a game the locals quickly embraced. It was played with a krpača on Vela Riva and Kušanov laz, and, for lack of anything better, with a dried pig's bladder.

The first known club in the town was ŠK "Zmaj", founded in 1923. After several years of matches against clubs from Blato, Hvar and Vis, on 17 July 1932 written approval of the club's statutes arrived from Belgrade — that act officially launched the work of Football Club "Hajduk" Vela Luka, whose first president was Prof. Ladislav Vučetić.

"
A person is worth as much as they give of themselves to a shared value, and NK Hajduk is truly a value to all of us from Vela Luka.
From the foreword to the monograph, 2022.

During the Second World War the club's archive was confiscated and irretrievably lost, so the club's early history today rests on the memories of participants, old photographs and the odd hand-written slip of paper. Post-war Hajduk resumed its work in 1946, competed regularly in the Dalmatian leagues, and in 2002 experienced its greatest moment — the round of 32 of the Croatian Football Cup against GNK Dinamo Zagreb.
